Creating Healthy Routines during Covid 19
Let’s face it, most of us are really struggling right now during this pandemic. Many of us are dealing with employment issues, trying to balance childcare while working, what to do with our kids throughout the day, and how to keep them engaged and happy. And this probably hasn't even scratched the surface of what many of us are experiencing.
Gandhi was once quoted as saying, “change yourself, you are in control.” Although we don’t really have a great deal of control over the situation right now, we do have control over our reactions; one of the few things we can control. One way we can feel a sense of power and control over our lives is to create a regular routine. During this pandemic, this may be one of the most helpful things we can do for ourselves and our children.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children do best when they have regular and predictable routines in their day to day life. Routines can help to limit anxiety by providing a stable, safe and secure place that children need. Routines provide a structure or organization to life and can limit the feeling of chaos, which can be especially present right now. Ideally, parents should find a balance, the AAP points out so that there is some structure, without being overly rigid.
Some simple suggestions to creating a sense of routine include; making sure to get enough sleep, waking up and getting out of bed (even though it can be tempting to sleep in), and eating at regular times. For children, creating a bedtime routine (reading stories together or listening to audiobooks or calming music) is a wonderful way to end the day.
A couple of other tips can include:
Daily exercise. Make sure kids (and you!) find at least once a day to get out and move, take a walk or bike-ride, play tennis or go for a swim. Make sure to get outdoors where there is natural vitamin D.
Find time to create: Do some art, bake or cook with your kids (you can find new recipes) regularly.
Limit screen time as much as possible. Although it can be tempting to read the ever changing news, this can also promote fear and anxiety. Perhaps pick a time where you shut off the social media or news (at least watch a movie instead!) and read a book or go for a walk.
Daily self care for grown-ups: Don’t forget about you! As much as humanly possible, finding time for yourself is critical; whether it’s taking a hike or walk in nature, treating yourself to coffee or dessert, finding a free online exercise workout (there are many out there!). Yoga or meditation can be extremely helpful. Maybe it’s getting up early to set aside an hour to yourself.
